_______________________________________________ Teddy sounded so certain when he spoke, so sure that she would be alright, that Dromeda couldn’t help but take comfort in it. It was a welcome change to simply have someone listen and not judge her on her decisions, or lack thereof. Everyone else always seemed to have an opinion on what she should be doing with her life and had no qualms making it known. Teddy was one of the first people she’d met that seemed happy to stay out of it and let her fight her own battles however she chose. She was grateful for that. Despite her slight, breakable looking frame, Andromeda was sure she was a lot stronger than people gave her credit for, if only they would give her the chance to stand on her own two feet without interference. Dromeda would always need someone behind her, supporting her with a safety net, she knew. She didn’t know if without Sirius’ inspiration she’d ever have had the courage to speak up for herself within her family. But perhaps they just didn’t need to stand quite as close these days.
“I like to think so,” she agreed with a quiet nod. “It’s been difficult while everything has been so hushed, so in-house. But now, with that poor girl going missing and the steps my family seem to be taking to secure my place in their little Pureblood bubble... in the midst of all this insanity, a couple things are actually starting to make sense. I just hope I have the time to make use of that”
Changing the subject had been necessary; Dromeda did not want to incriminate herself any further. She got the distinct impression that Teddy was someone she could trust, but the sad fact was you never knew who was listening. All it would take was one little whisper of dissent to get back to Bellatrix – or worse, her parents – and Dromeda dreaded to think what punishment would await her. She had already said too much to a young man who had no business getting involved in these matters. If anyone were to realise she’d taken quite a liking to him, that she had sought him out this evening, they would doubtlessly teach her a lesson by hurting Ted. She refused to be responsible for that, not when they had only just begun to be...confidants? Acquaintances? Friends? Whatever it was they were going to be.
The thought of him leaving their world – her world – after graduation felt like a lead weight dropping into her stomach, though she disguised it well, concentrating on the folds of the robes that had been so carefully carved into the silver in her hands. It made perfect sense for him she knew. But she couldn’t help a stubborn, selfishness that was in-built into their entire family. Blacks got what they wanted, and she did not want to entertain the idea of losing someone she could be so open with already, let alone how they might be when another year had passed. He quickly brought a light-hearted laugh from her however, as she pictured him taming dragons. They were such terrifying creatures and Teddy was just so darn...nice. It was a completely odd match.
“Dragons, hm?” she questioned with a smirk, flashing an amused look his way, “My, my. I never knew you were such a daredevil. If I ever learn to navigate the Muggle world I should like to see the bakery, but you will have to forgive me in advance for being less enthusiastic about seeking out a colony of giant fire-breathing reptiles. I’ve always been rather fonder of unicorns, I’m afraid, which if you’ll pardon my assumption I am guessing aren’t particularly open to you.”
Not that she was implying anything negative, of course, and she hoped he didn’t think so. The fact was they were creatures drawn to purity, grace and innocence, and Teddy’s masculine appearance was unlikely to do him any favours with unicorns. Dromeda was quite willing to disagree with them on that, however. Ahem. She shook her head with a smile as he repeatedly dropped the cup he had been polishing, wondering if it was simply clumsiness like she’d seen from him before or something else. Nervousness, perhaps? But then, she was probably reading too much into that. Plenty of people were nervous around all members of the Black family and it had nothing to do with anything else she may have been hoping for.
“Yes, I’m certain of that,” she said with a laugh, placing her own now gleaming statue aside. Was he turning red? “I’m sure you’ll find something far more suitable. Though, if I may, I don’t think dragon taming is a pursuit you should aim for. If you were to stay in the magical world, I would like to think you could perhaps be easier to visit. As friends.”
The last bit was added on quickly, and Dromeda wasn’t sure what she meant by it. The way he made her recheck her words and thoughts, made her keenly aware of how she sat and moved made her wonder if there was more to what was beginning her than friendship. But if that was to be all there was, she would be happy to call Ted a friend. She had so few, and to have one that seemed so inherently pleasant and easy to spend time with would be a treasure she’d rarely been awarded. Besides, she felt it might also put him at ease. There was always the chance he was still wondering why on earth she was still sat here with him, if she had some ulterior motive he was unaware of.
“Besides, Romania is an awfully long way to go for cinnamon rolls, no matter how delicious they may be, do you not think?”

The thought of Gamp made Teddy's stomach go cold. The only official word was that the young lady had gone missing, but somehow, he knew she was never coming back to school again. He hated to think it, would never voice such a thought, but... Gamp was gone. Shouldn't The Trace have found her by now? She had been a kind girl, a bit thick, but sweet and never one to raise her wand against another. It seemed so bizarre that she should disappear, a pureblood no less. Teddy hated to think it, but he was counting down the days to a funeral rather than a return.
He didn't want to think about Gamp; he wanted to think about more pleasant things. No death, no war, none of the nuances of blood nor birth. Andromeda provided a wonderful distraction. For these precious moments, everything was normal. They were just students cleaning the Trophy Room. Late at night. Alone. Bollocks. Things weren't simple at all where Andromeda Black was concerned. His mouth felt very dry all of a sudden.
"You think I lack the machismo to tame dragons?" Teddy queried, a little grin on his lips. "You wound me, Dromeda. I thought my beard alone would put me on good terms with Hungarian Horntails and Chinese Fireballs alike. I think I'd be a splendid dragon tamer. Or a lumberjack. Just because I make cute little pastries doesn't mean I don't enjoy pursuits that are hazardous to my health." That was total rubbish (well... maybe not. He did like motorbikes), but Andromeda didn't have to know that. He rather liked the thought of her seeing him as some dashing, daring wizard, having adventures and being generally wonderful. Even if all he wanted was to bake bread and mind a little cottage somewhere in the country.
He grinned at her mention of Unicorns, scratching the back of his head. She had a point there, he mused. He really wasn't looking forward to accompanying the third year Hufflepuffs to view Unicorns next Saturday, but a promise was a promise. He and the other boys would doubtlessly be bored out of their mind as the girls giggled and 'ooh'ed and 'aah'ed.
"Apparently unicorns aren't fond of mustaches. To be fair, I look awful with just a mustache," he considered, rubbing his face and glancing at his reflection in the trophy case. His stubble was coming in nicely, and with the beard it looked quite dashing in his humble opinion. Sans the beard, well... he could see why the unicorns hadn't liked him.
She informed him that Romania was too far away. For visits, for cinnamon rolls. He shot her a curious look, uncertain what to make of the revelation. She'd tacked on an almost awkward 'As Friends' (though Dromeda was never awkward, which he found to be supremely unfair). He watched her for a moment, waiting for her to reclaim her words, to spin a little explanation that would sweep the sentiment under the rug. Teddy swallowed.
"Well, absence makes the heart grow fonder," he remarked with a shrug, then promptly regretted that turn of phrase. "Ah, besides, my mum would never allow it. She'd faint at the mere mention of the word 'dragon'. I don't have the heart to do that to her. Hippogriffs, however..." he trailed off, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. Italy didn't seem like a bad idea either. "Kidding."

_______________________________________________ At his small grin and playful retort, Dromeda felt a flutter in her stomach. It was one thing being able to take her little sarcastic jibes and light-hearted insults, but it was another altogether to be able to engage her in a conversation afterwards, Though she’d never been the smart, naturally talented sister (that fell to Bellatrix), Dromeda liked to think she had a fairly quick wit and an uncanny ability to think on her feet after years of coming up with valid excuses for missing balls and dinners and galas with her family. There were few people her own age who took the time to get past her initially dismissive-seeming attitude and draw her in, make her want to learn more about them. It intrigued her more than she let on. As prejudiced as it was, she’d never really expected a Hufflepuff to be so quick a match for her. A most pleasant surprise, she was sure.
“Oh, my dear Teddy, I would never dream of insulting your ‘machismo’” she quipped in reply, in a manner that could easily have been condescending had it not been for the growing, lop-sided smile on her face. “If your dream in life is to go chasing after creatures that one day will burn you to a crisp or tear you into several small pieces, be my guest. Just don’t come back to haunt me when I say ‘I told you so’”
His thoughts on the unicorns didn’t surprise her. She’d always been surprised at how open they were towards the Gamekeeper though. Andromeda didn’t think she’d ever seen a hairier person, and yet they had no trouble approaching him at the edges of the Forest when he went about his duties. She could hardly imagine something else putting them off Teddy. He hardly seemed the sort to have an evil streak in him, something that would send them running. But unicorns were strange creatures, and in her quietly held opinion ones with very poor taste. Watching him quickly take in his reflection in the glass cabinet, she let a quick, appreciative smile of her own cross her lips. Poor taste, indeed.
By the time he turned back to her, of course, it had been quickly hidden. There was an odd moment as he regarded her after her last comment, which she used to pick up another shield, starting to polish all the small silver crests on it. Something to do with successful Quidditch captains, she’d never been much of a fan of the sport herself. His reply made her glance up questioningly for a moment, her head faintly tilted to one side, before she resumed her work, deciding not to pry further into his choice of words. Ladies did not chase gentlemen.
“Well, your mother sounds like a very sensible woman,” Dromeda said with a nod, shifting her position slightly. She’d been sat back on her heels a while now, and could feel the beginnings of pins and needles in her feet that preceded them going numb. Trying to stand up when one couldn’t feel their own feet was never graceful and elegant, and in fact made one look rather like a drunken spider tripping over its own legs. Not a look that would endear her to anyone, Dromeda mused, though it would probably amuse Teddy to no end.
“Hippogriffs are slightly more acceptable,” she joked, playing along. “At this rate with your dragons and hippogriffs and my unicorns we’ll be opening some sort of menagerie. I would ask for no sphinxes, however. The things infuriate me, and I’ve heard they can be quite vicious given the chance.”
In truth, it wasn’t something Andromeda could picture herself doing. She’d never been fond of most animals and creatures, magical or otherwise. They just made such a mess. The only one she’d ever been personally attached to was the augurey her family kept to keep fairies out of the study. It had been a lovely bird (though most thought them hideous with their vulture-like appearance) and its sad song when it was about to rain had always been that kind of music that made you want to cry it was so beautiful. As she sat polishing the name of some captain who’d never once committed a foul in six years of playing, a thought popped into her head, something she was curious about. She was sure her own parents would make themselves ill if they heard she was going to go off looking after dangerous magical creatures, but they at least knew what was involved.
“How much do you tell them? Your mother and father?” she queried her interest in the way his family lived unable to keep its head down for long after the whole submarine conversation. “I know the Ministry explain about Hogwarts and magic and the like, but I imagine things like dragons, unicorns and fairies are somewhat more difficult to digest when you’ve only ever thought of them as make-believe creatures dreamt up to fill the stories of children?”
