For the first time this month, the rain had let up. Alice took solace in the omen, hoping the sunlight would somehow clear the air of all the tension. Maybe the sunlight could make all this misery float away, let everyone pretend that everything was beautiful again. It wasn't likely, but a girl could dream.
Alice had spent her morning in Greenhouse Three, tending her little garden. Professor Sprout had generously allocated a small bed to her last year, along with several hanging pots and even a bed that would exclusively house the results of her experiment. After the Man Eating Pineapple, Alice had refrained from her experimental breeding for two years. However, after happening upon an exotic strain of Devil's Snare, she hadn't been able to stop herself. Professor Sprout had helped her purchase several specimens of Devil's Snare and some highly toxic vines. For science.
For the past year, Alice had been cross breeding this vines and Devil's Snare, trying to produce a poisonous varient of Snare. She'd always had a fascination for lethal magic and plants, though Alice argued her interest was strictly academic. It was foolish to pretend dark magic and dangerous flora and fauna weren't a part of their world and their history. Alice wanted to know everything about magic, and despite abhoring some of the more decidedly evil spells, appreciated them for their power and complexity. It was this damnable curiosity that had gotten her into this mess with Lestrange, but she couldn't help herself. She was drawn to the things most likely to kill her.
After a morning of notes and ensuring the health of her specimens, Alice had set to preparing for The Meeting. She'd been dreading The Meeting for the past week, but her encounter with Black yesterday had eased some of her anxiety. Despite ending up shouting (and crying, though Alice tried not to think about that), The Idea and the subsequent Plan gave her hope. She could only hope her only friends would understand. Thus, The Meeting had been arranged. Hopefully Lily and Ted would deign Alice with their presence, give her an opportunity to explain why she had suddenly gone rather frosty on them.
Alice had happened upon the Come and Go room in her fourth year, after a rather lengthy spell of Levicorpus, courtesy of the Marauders. A particularly kind seventh year had helped her down and taken her to the room to give her a place to calm down and hide. Alice had become quite fond of the room in the following years. Eventually, she, Teddy and Lily had made a habit of coming to the room for a quiet cup of tea and cakes, enjoying the privacy it afforded them. Lily especially enjoyed that the room was good at keeping James Potter at bay, a fact which amused Alice to this day.
She showed up more than two hours early, unable to ignore her anxiety any earlier. The room had shaped itself into its customary blend of the trio. A small hearth with an oven dominated the sitting area, with elegant and absurdly comfy chairs arranged about the fire. A wide variety of plants dominated the decor, with red and gold tapestries covering the walls and an elegance that belonged exclusively to Lily. Alice found comfort in the normality of the room, and could only hope it would never be tarnished by the war.
Alice always handled the tea, and she'd downed a pot herself before the clock struck four. Her hands were shaking as she waited in her favorite chair, and she tried vainly to still them in her lap. Her heart beat a wild song, straining against her chest in a desperate bid for freedom. On Alice waited.

Well, Lily thought to herself as she scanned the short note, she was right about that.
It had been several days now since the mayhem that had ensued from the Marauders’ party, and Lily had seen neither head nor tail of Alice. It certainly hadn’t been for want of trying. But whenever Lily went to the dorm rooms for the sixth years she had been out, and she must have slipped to and from the common room like a ghost. It wasn’t even as if the redhead could catch her friend’s attention in class where they were in different years; their classes ran on completely different schedules and seemed to clash at the most convenient times. Lily was half wondering if the girl had taken lessons from James on sneaking around the school, as it seemed the only reasonable explanation for how she’d managed to avoid her for so long.
It wasn’t even as if Lily wanting to talk to her was a rare thing. She, Alice and Ted had been having these little meetings for a while now. It was a chance for the three of them to escape the rest of the school, enjoy one another’s company (and Ted’s wonderful cakes of course), and talk about things that they felt were for each other’s ears only. In fact, Lily had been tempted to call one herself after the events of Monday evening. She had wanted to talk through her little indiscretion with James – because that’s how she saw it – with someone she thought she could trust, and that award fell solely to the two of them. However, after the party and Alice’s disappearance, Lily knew that there were more important things to be discussed this time.
She spent the morning working on a dull but necessary Charms assignment that if she’d been honest she easily could have written the morning it was due in and still gotten the best grade in the class – it had always been her best subject. Even for her, however, it had been difficult to concentrate with the meet hanging over her head. At half past three, she readily stashed her things away and headed off to their usual room. Alice had been the one to reveal the room to the group, and Lily had since taken a great liking to it. It seemed to be about the only place in school James Potter couldn’t follow her, and in previous years she’d have lived in there if she’d had the choice.
Lily normally handled some sort of refreshments for the three of them, but in all the anxiety she’d not really even thought. Entering the room empty handed, her eyes landed immediately on Alice sat in the chair she’d adopted some time ago as her own, looking nervous and skittish as a kitten waiting for the fireworks to start. Alice was one of her closest friends, and had been for years. She had been one of the only people who Lily had felt able to cry in front of after the Mudblood incident in her Fifth Year, and who hadn’t simply passed her off with an ‘I told you so’. It was this very relationship that meant she was so frustrated with the younger girl right now, and it showed in her expressionless face and crossed arms as she let the door close behind her.
“Well, it’s nice to know you’ve not fallen off the edge of the earth or joined the masked maniacs’ brigade,” she remarked, bitterness in her tone and stance. She didn’t like being so angry with her friends, but Alice had hurt Lily. She had made her doubt yet another friend, and after Severus she had hardened to such betrayal now. It would not be her again. She sat down in her own chair, settling back into the cushions with her arms still tight across her chest. “No Ted yet, then, I assume?”
Though she missed her fellow Muggle-born’s company, Lily half hoped he might run late today. She and Alice needed to talk, and she didn’t want Ted stuck in the middle feeling like he had to take a side. It wasn’t his argument. It was theirs.

way out in the water see it swimming W H E R E I S M Y M I N D ?- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lily was right on time, of course. And she was as cool and angry as she ought to be. Alice could't help but flinch at the redhead's temper. Alice had seen Lily's famous temper loads of times, but she'd never been on the receiving end. It was every bit unpleasant as she had imagined it. Lily had this way of making even the most self-assured wizard feel guilty. It was not comfortable to be under the steely gaze of the Head Girl.
Alice kept her composure as best she could, sitting neatly on her chair. She drew comfort from lessons of stiff upper lips and that famous English reserve her mother so revered. She focused on her breathing, willing it to normalcy. Lily's presence had calmed her, oddly enough. The anticipation of Lily's anger was almost worse than sitting through it. At least now, Alice hoped, she could explain herself and Lily wouldn't hate her forever. The thought of losing her best friend in the world made her physically ill. Quite literally. Alice had spent the last few nights slumped over the toilet at odd hours of the night, choking back sobs as she tried to figure out what to do. It had seemed inevitable that Alice would have to lose Lily and Teddy to keep her family safe. And while there was no question of Alice's choice, it didn't make the thought any less horrible.
Alice watched Lily rather meekly. She waited until the older girl had settled in properly before she spoke. Lily would need to sit down for the news Alice was going to deliver.
"I deserved that," she admittted quietly. Alice was not one to admit fault easily. She'd inherited her father's stubborn streak. It was a rare thing for Alice to accept poor treatment these days as she'd learned to use her spine. "Teddy's escorting lower classmen to some extra curricular Unicorn viewing trip for Professor Kettleburn," she explained quietly, "He said he'd be running late."
She couldn't express how grateful she'd been to Teddy. She'd caught him in secret shortly after Gamp's disappearance, and he'd been a better friend than she deserved. He was honoring his promise to look out for Simon and he was doing it without any clue as to why Alice was avoiding him. He had shamed her with his kindness, but she couldn't deny relief at the thought of someone she trusted watching after her younger brother.
Alice paused for many moments, worrying her lower lip. She'd spent hours trying to phrase things the right way and had come up short.
"I suppose I should start with an apology. Or, err, at the beginning." Alice's hands began worrying the hem of her dress as she crossed her ankles, trying to calm down. "It's... complicated."
Alice debated just telling Lily then and there, spilling this damn secret out to her. Alice wanted to, even opened her mouth to do so, before stopping herself. Alice loved Lily, but Lily was even more devoted to justice than she was and would march straight to the Headmaster and tell him everything. And, more than that, Alice wasn't sure she wanted to see Lily's disgust. Not that she wasn't already seeing it. Alice dropped her gaze to her hands in her lap. She'd been stung by her hybrid Snare and the welt it left was turning an interesting shade of green.
"I know you want a name," Alice said quietly, not moving her gaze. "I can't, I-I won't." She looked up, jutting out her chin slightly. "I have to look out for my brother and I won't have him disappear."
Her hands were shaking again and she dug her nails into the palms, willing them to stop. "I... got caught up with the wrong bloke. I didn't know any of this was going to happen, I swear. I thought he was full of hot air," that was only partially honest. Alice knew the Dark Mark wasn't handed out to just anyone, but she had assumed Professor Dumbledore's presence would have deterred him from acting so brazenly in Hogwarts, "But he wasn't. And Gamp came from a good family that hadn't picked a side and my parents haven't picked one either and Simon's thirteen. So... I won't name him."
Alice breathed deep and shut her eyes, speaking very quickly, trying to get it over with as fast as possible, "ButItalkedwithBlackyesterdayandIthinkIcandoonebetter." Inhale. Exhale. Alice looked up at Lily nervously, and spoke in a rather high voice, "I'm going to find out what happened to Gamp. And when I get proof, no one will be able to say we're just drunk kids who are pointing fingers and naming him will actually do something. And that, I guess brings us to... this," Alice's voice was rapidly losing confidence under Lily's fierce gaze. Alice tried to find her nerve. It had come so easily to her in the Owlery, but she couldn't find it here. "I can get him to trust me. But..."
Alice stumbled over her words, and she felt twelve and fat and awkward again. She flushed furiously, partly from frustration, and mostly from humiliation.
"But he's got to think I'm willing to throw in with his lot," she managed rather weakly, once again looking away from Lily. Alice busied herself with serving tea, making a mess of it. She threw her hands up in exasperation, fingers trembling the whole way.

“You’re damn right you did,” Lily snapped as Alice admitted deserving the redhead’s temper. “Where the hell have you been? You disappeared that night, nobody’s seen you. Apparently you were completely unconcerned about the people your new love interest took his wand to – they were fine, by the way – and more interested in avoiding any questions. It’s nice to know where my so-called friend’s priorities lie.”
She wasn’t sure what part of what Alice had done angered her the most. The abandoning of the group to escape at the first given moment, the avoidance of any of them for days on end, the fact that she hadn’t even thought to ask after those that got on the wrong end of a wand. Lily had spent years hating James and Sirius when Alice had tried in vain to defend them, and yet the head girl had been the one there to pick up the pieces and patch them up with Remus afterwards. Then there was the meek way she had chosen to get in touch, an almost anonymous letter left on her pillow. Lily had fought the instinct the scrunch it up and toss it away, she’d been to mad. But now she thought about it, it was none of these things that left Lily almost shaking.
Alice had been her best friend, and now Lily wasn’t sure if she still had one. She had been close to someone before who had switched sides quicker than she could say quaffle, and the betrayal had cut plenty deep enough to leave some emotional scars. She didn’t exactly have trust issues, but she had certainly kept her guard up for a while. Alice and Ted were the two people she felt she didn’t have to be so careful around, and the other girl had thrown that in her face. The thought that yet another of her closest friends was not who they said is what hurt her the most, not because they had lied, but because she’d been stupid enough to believe them.
“Advanced Arithmancy is complicated. The unfathomable filing system in the Restricted Section is complicated. Deserting your friends when they need you the most, that seems like quite a simple choice to me.”
Lily paused her sharp comments as Alice attempted to give an explanation. She deserved the one chance to explain herself, but it was the only chance she would be given, so Lily hoped she made good use of it. When she mentioned her brother, Lily had to admit she could see why Alice might have been scared. He was only thirteen years old, and if whoever had done this to Gamp truly was only acting to get to her family as Alice suggested, it was possible her family were on the same list. Still, she found it hard to summon sympathy. Lily had been dealing with verbal, physical and magical attacks from those cretins for years, and would never even dream of running off while the people she claimed to acre about were in trouble. It wasn’t in her nature to back down or step aside, and it never would be as long as she had any say about it.
As the younger girl revealed her plan, Lily’s face went from steely to disbelief. Sirius had spoken to Alice and not said anything? And he’d known she’d been considering this idea? She would be having serious words with him. He could be as reckless and foolhardy as he wanted, but he couldn’t expect everyone else in Gryffindor to act the same out of some misguided sense of loyalty. Everyone would have their own way of dealing with this situation. They didn’t all have to go running off guns blazing. Besides, had she not thought through what pretending to be one of them meant?
“Are you insane or just incredibly stupid all of a sudden?” Lily asked, her voice low a quiet. She found it was often more intimidated than her shouting, but right now is was a natural change. “If you pretend to join up with that lot, the first thing they’re going to want from you is proof that you believe, and it won’t be as easy to convince them as just calling me a Mudblood in public.” She still winced at the word, but carried on seamlessly. “They’ve already gone for someone completely innocent, so who’s next? Sirius is the biggest blood traitor around; does he deserve the next lesson? Maybe they’ll get you to attack Hufflepuff’s new resident protector, hm? Or maybe they’ve got so sick of a Muggle-born witch telling them what to do, they’ll ask you to put me out of action for a few days, or weeks. You’ve been mine and Ted’s friend for years. Do you really think we won’t be the first people they jump to so they can be convinced themselves you’ll fall in line without question?”
Alice wasn’t a stupid girl. How had she not considered this? The Pureblood fanatics needed people to be loyal, and that meant cutting all ties with anyone who was even slightly in doubt. She couldn’t imagine how Alice thought this was in any way, shape, or form a good diea. It would only lead to more trouble, and Lily simply would not have it. Damn it, she was head girl. She was meant to be protecting her friends, protecting the school and it’s students, and the first attack on a student in decades had come under her watch. She would not let the school dissolve into chaos, and her friends would not be a part of it.
“Could you do it, Alice, if they told you? Could you raise your wand on Ted, or me? Could you put us in the Hospital Wing without blinking an eye?”

She should have known better, but she'd secretly hoped Lily would have been on board anyways. She returned her hands to her lap, brain searching for the words necessary to convince the red head. A sense of dread was washing over Alice, the horrible feeling that nothing would work and this was the end of Lily and Alice. She steeled herself. She couldn't give up quite yet.
"I was scared," she said simply, because she didn't know what else to say. "I was blitzed out of my mind, and I didn't know what to do. The only bloke in this whole school to ever look twice at me turned out to be violently unhinged and I was in no state to face The Gryffindor Inquisition." She paused, looking Lily in the eyes. "So I ran. I'm not saying it was the right choice, but it's what happened."
Lily was even more vocally opposed to The Plan. Alice supposed she would have felt the same way in her shoes. If Lily had run off to dally about with The Marauders and abandon her, Alice imagined she'd be just as apocalyptically angry as Lily. She watched her, half wondering if Lily's famous temper was going to bring out her wand. Alice was a good witch, especially when it came to dueling, but she wasn't keen on the idea of having to duel her best friend.
"You can't see the utility in this?" Alice asked, and she couldn't keep her surprise out of her voice. "Think about it, Lily. None of us knew what was going to happen to Gamp, but they knew about the party, how to get in, and how to get to her. That was planned well in advance." She tried to find a hint of acceptance in Lily's gaze and came up short. "We have no idea who's next or what they're planning. But if we can find out, maybe we can stop it."
Alice had thought long and hard on the idea of having to prove her loyalty, and it had troubled her. Everything about this troubled her, to be honest, but Alice couldn't see a way out. Lestrange was right. Everything was different now. There was no way they would all make it through this alive. Alice wanted to do her best to give Simon a fighting chance.
"Would you honestly rather have some full blown blood maniac attacking you, or someone who is rather good at non-verbal magic pulling their punches?" She said quietly, willing Lily to understand. Alice had never been good at Potions, had always been dead awful at Astronomy and Divination, but she'd never earned below an O in Defence Against the Dark Arts. Alice had inherited her father's flair for peculiar, combative magic. She didn't doubt that she could master some non-verbal illusion. "And if you, or Teddy, or Black are in on the act, do you really think we can't manage something convincing? You're the best witch in Hogwarts, Lily."
The compliment was one she'd given freely over the years to Lily, but it was the truth. Lily just seemed to know magic in a way completely different from anything Alice had seen before. Alice was clever, but her strengths relied solely upon hard work and grit. Lily had a natural talent that was made even more frightening with her work ethic.
"Wouldn't you?" Alice returned the question. "If it were your family on the line, wouldn't you do anything to protect them? I'd be disappointed if you didn't send me to hospital if it were you." She paused, watching the fire for a long moment. She felt very out of her element. "I'm doing my best to keep Simon from getting hurt. I can't do this all on my own, Lily. I need your help."

Alice brought up her previous experience with guys, and Lily felt herself soften slightly. The redhead herself had only ever had one bloke in the school show her the sort of attention Alice was talking about, but that was still one more than her friend. She could imagine getting carried away, had she been in the same position. However, in Lily’s mind it was still no excuse for running. Gryffindors were meant to be brave and bold, and she certainly fell into that category. She had never backed down from an argument or fight – had occasionally started a few herself – and her pride wouldn’t ever allow her to take what she saw as the coward’s way out. She had thought more of Alice than that, and felt anger mix with a bitter disappointment at her excuse. It just wasn’t enough.
“Sure. He was the only guy in school to ever look twice at you. I can see why that would take precedence over a friend that’s stuck by your side for the past, what, four, five years?”
Anger clearly wasn’t working. Perhaps guilt would be a better way to go. Not just guilt, but honesty. Lily could vividly remember Alice slipping her arm away and scurrying off into the crowds, leaving her stood there bewildered as to where she was escaping to. It hurt her to think that since she had lost her weight and thrown herself into staying healthy with her running that grabbing the attention of a boy was now more important than spending time with her. Lily would never dream of abandoning her friends for a boy. Even when she had been close to Severus she had made time for Alice, Ted, and Mary. How was she supposed to say that though? Lily doubted Alice realised quite how difficult it was to be this angry with your best friend.
As the future was speculated on, Lily quietened, turning inwards in thought as she leaned forward to pour herself a cup of tea, her hands trembling slightly as she lifted the cup to blow the liquid cool before taking a sip. She needed to calm herself down, and as stereotypical as it was tea always soothed her. This had snuck up on all of them. Lily wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if another student went missing or worse, and she’d been the cause of it. She’d already beaten herself up about delaying the search for Gamp with Sirius, Remus and James. If they’d only gotten out a couple of minutes earlier, was there something they could have seen or done to change what had happened? They would never know now. But what they could do was take measures to stop a repeat event, and to do that they needed information from somewhere; information that couldn’t be learned from a textbook. God, they were so young to be dealing with this.
“Compliments won’t get you off the hook for this,” she scorned with a frown, before sighing and sitting back into her chair, “but I guess you’re right. There’s no way we can do anything without knowing what their plans are. There’s no way they’d believe Sirius has switched back to their side after the fight, or James. They wouldn’t believe Remus, and Peter’s about as much use as a chocolate teapot in situation like this.”
Her eyes turned to the ceiling in thought as she took another long sip of her drink, concentrating on calming herself. The last thing she wanted to do was fall out with her best friend when what she was suggesting was as good a course of action as any. That didn’t mean Lily had to like it. If she could have put herself forward she would have in a second, but she could have been an award winning actress and the people behind this still wouldn’t have taken her in. They needed a Pureblood, someone who could believably have switched sides, and of their group that role landed solely in Alice’s territory, and she was stepping up to the mark. Perhaps it had been harsh of Lily to think of her as being cowardly. It would take a lot of nerve to go through with this.
“If it was me, anyone that tried to touch the people I cared about would be in St. Mungo’s for the rest of their lives.”
It was rare for Lily so say anything so drastic, but her tone was deadly serious. Her eyes were like steel as she brought them back to Alice. It wasn’t anger with the girl now, though, but the determination in her voice. Lily would lay down her life for the people she loved. She didn’t know why she had thought anyone else would be different.
“We would have to keep as few people from knowing as possible. The risk of people slipping up is too much when it’s you in the firing line if anything goes wrong. That means you, Sirius, me, and whoever they tell you to go for if it’s someone else. People’s reactions have to be believable, and the best way to do that is if they really think you’ve switched sides.”
If they did decide to single her out, Lily thought, that would also mean keeping James in the dark. She dreaded to think how he might react if Alice did have to turn her wand on the redhead. Sirius would know and hold him back, she had no doubt, but after their conversation the other night she’d seen things in him that made her worry. It was insane to even be considering this, but what other choice did they have? Lily was the goody two shoes, and even she knew it would be no good going to professors at this point. There was already talk of the school closing.
“I won’t let anyone else get hurt under my watch. I’m Head Girl, Alice, and two weeks into my run a girl’s gone missing, a serious duel has broken out and they’re seriously discussing closing the school if anything more happens. I won’t let my time here be remembered that way. I’m better than that. We’re better than that.”

She'd spent the past week wrestling with far too much emotion for her liking. She'd finally felt as if she'd gotten a grip on herself, but Lily's words opened the flood gates anew. The guilt, the frustration, the humiliation kept washing over her. Alice felt rather small and pathetic in the face of her failings. Having to own up to them was not exactly the most pleasant experience in the world.
Clearly, this wasn't working. Lily was not on board with the plan, and Alice had no idea how to begin tackling damage control. All she could do was sit there while five years of friendship crashed and burned all around her. It was like all the light had gone out of the world. She hadn't realised how cold the room was until now. She simply held her tongue, watching Lily wearily. She would leave soon, and that would be the end of things. She ought to be screaming at her to stop, begging for forgiveness, but the brutality of it silenced her. It would be another horrible memory, another secret to carry, another day she wanted to forget.
Alice was so resigned to fate, she almost hadn't caught Lily's change of heart. She tuned back in, watching her best friend numbly. It seemed impossible that Lily should be on board with a plan she so hated. Lily never did things she didn't want to, never let anyone talk her into things. Alice had always admired that about the redhead, having been powerless for so long. Alice's hands clenched tightly about the hem of her dress, trying not to feel hopeful. As grim as it was, she was prepared to lose Lily. She didn't want to be caught off guard and suffer the blow without her walls in place.
But the way Lily spoke about protecting her loved ones made Alice release the breath she'd been holding subconsciously. A rush of relief swam through her blood, soothing tensed muscles and nerves. The look in her eyes was no longer furious, just grim determination. Alice could work with grim determination.
"Teddy," Alice added to the list quickly, "He's watching Simon, he has to know."
Alice didn't relish the thought of the aftermath of her 'switch'. Undoubtedly several muggleborns and halfbloods and sympathisers in her house would be turning their wands on her. She and Lily would have to have a public falling out. And she'd have to approach Rabastan, beg him for that offer of protection. It was enough to make her sick. But what choice did she have?
"Thank you," she said quietly. Her smile was weak, only a faint dimple appearing in her cheek, as she realised how tired she was. "I am really sorry for... everything."

The hours dragged. Teddy was beginning to regret volunteering to accompany the Hufflepuff second years to watch Unicorns. Being rather male, he'd been forced to hang back with a gaggle of twelve year old boys and wait for the girls to finish ooh-ing and aah-ing over the unicorns. Teddy had been so excited to meet a unicorn when he was younger, and he'd been rather put out when even the foals wouldn't approach him. Professor Kettleburn informed him that, as he'd started managing an impressive mustache at twelve, he was simply too masculine for the creatures.
He'd spent the majority of the trip sat against a tree, idly floating leaves and twigs about. He'd had a rather lot to think about. He had a Transfiguration exam next week to finish. One of his best mates had decided to turn into a blood elitist. And then there was Andromeda Black. It was difficult to think clearly when it came to her. Ever since his detention last week, it had been difficult to get her off his mind. He wasn't sure why his thoughts were so pervasively focussed on the witch, but he didn't examine that too closely. Things were already strange enough.
He'd found that he rather enjoyed spending time with Andromeda. She was a singularly hilarious witch, and one who weirdly didn't mind listening to him tell muggle stories. She'd been downright fascinated by submarines and his family. He'd never expected that. It had been difficult to go back to class with her and pretend like nothing had changed. He'd been made even more acutely aware of Narcissa Black's eyes on the back of his head. Did she know? Did she know her sister had spent hours alone with a mudblood? Did she know her sister didn't believe in the very motto of their house?
Teddy was eventually freed from his thoughts. He accompanied the Hufflepuffs back to their classroom. The girls giggled and talked the whole way back, and their good mood was infectious. By the time he'd dropped them off at the common room, he was no longer agonising over the most confusing of the Black's. Instead, he'd nicked a platter of rolls from the kitchens and set off to face another set of troubling thoughts.
Teddy and Alice had been friends since second year, when they'd been made Herbology partners. He'd been there for The Man Eating PIneapple Incident. She'd taste tested dozens of his recipes. She'd introduced him to Lily and they'd been having tea and cakes together for the past two years. He liked to think he knew her, and it was rather off putting that she'd abandoned four years of friendship. But she'd asked him to keep watch over Simon, begged him to forgive her, so he supposed he should at least go to this meeting.
He quite liked the Come and Go room. Whenever he arrived, Lily said he always disrupted the decor. Giant motorbikes had a way of popping out of the floor, which was apparently not particularly chic nor elegant. He paced the way three times, then shuffled through the door with the basket of warm rolls.
Lily and Alice didn't look particularly cheery. He breathed deep, and let the door shut behind him. A motorbike had suspended itself from the ceiling, and his tartan chair appeared. He dropped down into it, looking between his female companions.
"We good?"

Lily caught the way Alice clutched at the hem of her dress, the way the dawn of realisation came into her eyes as she clocked that Lily was lending her support to the plan. The redhead had no doubt it was unexpected. Under any other circumstances there was no way she’d be agreeing to be a part of this mess. Not only would it most certainly involve breaking school rules, but it was willingly putting people in a horrible situation without any involvement from the professors or the headmaster. It was reckless, possibly foolish, and definitely dangerous. But if it meant keeping the majority of the students safe – Alice’s brother included – and everyone involved knew exactly what they were about to let themselves into, Lily didn’t feel she had much of an argument.
“I know. So am I” Lily replied, returning her friend’s small smile. “You can thank me by making the row we’re going to have thoroughly convincing. If I’m not reduced to tears, Alice, I’ll be disappointed.”
She forced a dark laugh, trying to diffuse the tension in the air. The fact was that Alice knew her better than anyone now. If she really wanted to, the brunette could find the ammunition to reduce Lily to tears, she had no doubt. The likelihood was that if she managed that, the tears would quite possibly be genuine. Lily would know it was all an act, of course, and would pull her weight in making it believable that the two girls would not be reconciling anytime in the future, but hearing some of the things Alice might say even knowing it was only to make others think she’d really switched sides would still be hurtful. But it would work.
Lily knew who had joined them before he even spoke. Obviously nobody else knew where they were meeting, but there was always a little niggling worry that somebody would find their room whilst the three of them were there. The motorbike that appeared suspended from the ceiling, however, put her mind immediately at rest. It clashed tremendously with the elegant tapestry cushions and dainty ornaments that Lily’s influence brought. She took a sip of her tea as Teddy sat down.
“Must that awful contraption always insist on appearing when you’re here?” she questioned, as she knew she always did. It had become a sort of running joke, and anything to bring the afternoon back to a little normalcy was welcome in Lily’s mind. Alice had been the one to introduce Ted to her, and it was nice to have another Muggleborn to talk to who understood her references to the non-magical world, even if their tastes in music were worlds apart. His cakes made up for that.
At his question she gave a sidelong look at Alice, the smile that curved her lips less nervous this time, reassuring as she could be to the witch.
“We’re good,” she replied with a nod. “You? Rather glad to have escaped the gaggle of twelve year old girls falling in love with the unicorns, I bet?”
Lily could remember her first encounter with the creatures and how amazed she had been. As a young girl they’d naturally been more inclined to approach her, and having believed them to exist only in fairytales as a child she hadn’t wanted the class to end. She could remember how wonderful Hogwarts had seemed, even when she’d already been there a year. How it always had something to surprise her, how she could pick up one of her textbooks and spend hours poring over its words. It had been a slightly sad occasion when she turned seventeen. She was an adult in this world now, and little in it really took her breath away anymore. It was becoming more every-day than her Muggle life. She’d even briefly forgotten how to use her mother’s typewriter over the summer. It had been a shock to the system, how much she had integrated herself into a world that for ten years she hadn’t even known existed.
