9th October, 1976, Saturday, After Match
Severus had decided for some unknown reason besides insanity to go see his young recruit play. To say it had been ugly and would have been so either way would have been an understatement. He knew Saxton was brutal but that was…sadism. Then again she was no Carrow so he took solace in that. He had recommended she spend more time studying and less playing quidditch. After seeing her play he had to rethink that. She needed an outlet and he’d prefer it be quidditch and not wind up like Amycus’s hobbies. No one should have that hobby.
Severus left Solanum to her post game cool down. Win or lose it was best to give her time. She would be marked soon and she should enjoy being without care while she could. Severus himself needed time to think himself. He clutched the Slytherin scarf that hung around his neck with both hands. The only sign that he was in any house at all. It belonged to Solanum and she insisted he wear it to show house pride and that he was rooting for her.
“Such a pureblood.” he said to himself.
Severus couldn’t help but think of how things might have been if it hadn’t been for that fateful day. Those hateful words. A friendship gone in the blink of an eye. It was already beginning to fade. His love for her. Slowly but surely. He didn’t know why. Perhaps it was the constant sightings of Potter trying to get Lily’s attention. Even he could tell the outcome. She was starting to succumb to his charms. What she saw in him he didn’t know and honestly didn’t want to understand. It changed how he saw her. How he thought of her. Made him wonder if he ever really knew her. Potter was the opposite of everything he thought she wanted. Maybe he had been wrong. Then again she was a Gryffindor.
Severus walked over to an isolated part of the lake somewhat out of view. He didn’t want to be interrupted as he thought. Or caught depending on what he eventually did. No he wasn’t going to throw himself in the lake. He wasn’t some lovesick Hufflepuff. He just wanted to think about what his life had become before he was forced to go back to his house and deal with his housemates.
He rolled up his sleeve and really looked at it. The mark. It seemed to have happened in the blink of an eye. One minute his arm was bare and the next there it was. He took his finger and traced it. It seemed to move as he did so. As if it was a separate entity with its own life. He didn’t know how he felt about it but either way it was there to stay. The dark lord made sure of that.
“What have you done to me?” he asked the dark mark.
Of course there was no answer.
{Okay…ouch…not too good there.}
