Sunday 12th September It had only been a couple of days since Sirius had asked her out over breakfast, but to Eva it felt like an eternity to wait. She had been thinking about it nonstop since then, and her friends hadn’t helped that fact. It was all they could talk about, and anytime they spotted him they couldn’t help but giggle senselessly and relay their experience back to Eva. It only made her more nervous that the boy probably thought she was likely to be equally infatuated with him and just as giggly as her peers. But Eva was too shy for all that.
She had spent the previous day cramming, which was rather depressing on a Saturday but necessary if she was to spend Sunday in a split between seeing her friends and Sirius too. This morning they had excitedly picked out outfits and helped her do her hair and make-up, then they’d all gone shopping as planned. All the time Eva’s stomach was doing backflips thinking about her date. When it got to about half three she hugged and kissed them all goodbye and headed to Honeydukes, where she waited for Sirius who she was due to meet around four-ish.
It was awfully cold that day and Eva stood hugging her coat tightly around herself shivering slightly. She wore shoes with a slight heel today and her feet were already hurting a tad from their shopping, she wondered quite how long he would take. It was only when it got to about quarter past four that she really started to worry Evelina wondered if the whole thing was a big joke and suddenly felt extremely foolish. Or maybe something had happened to him and he couldn’t let her know. It wasn’t that late but she didn’t want to show herself up being stood around – if any of her friends saw her still standing here she’d be so embarrassed. But then if she left now he might wonder where she went. Evelina really didn’t know what to do. She looked around hopefully, it was so busy she wondered if maybe she just hadn’t spotted him. Looking up at the village clock, she told herself she would wait for another ten minutes and that would be enough.

It was amazing how reliable Hogwarts gossip could be. Alecto had managed to learn more than he ever wanted to know about the Gamp girl in less than an hour. A rather dull Hufflepuff, but considered beautiful by her peers. A good deal of the school was whispering about Sirius Black's newfound interest in the lass, and with this information came rather tawdry rumors about Gamp's character. Amycus, at least, had been given more than enough information to work his magic.
He knotted the tie at his throat carefully, determined to get it just right. He had to look harmless. Charming, but harmless. His sister had selected a much less harsh ensemble for him, assuring Amycus that the red sweater really did soften his features, honest. He trusted her judgement, as he did in all things.
He shot his reflection a smile, willing warmth into his eyes. He looked clean cut, wealthy, but gone was the wildness that usually accompanied him. His eyes seemed alive, almost inviting. This, Amycus mused, would do nicely.
The others were handling Black, delaying him from Gamp. Amycus disliked allowing others to work alongside him, but Alecto had silenced his irritation. She wanted this. Wanted their mark, craved it. He would oblige his sister.
The rain had eased up momentarily by the time Amycus reached Hogsmeade. Wandering the streets, his dark eyes watched the crowds, hunting. She wasn't difficult to spot. The Hufflepuff was tall, leggy, and looking rather put out. Amycus couldn't help but smile. She was so innocent standing there, and he wanted so very badly to examine her lungs. He suspected they would be particularly lovely.
Amycus remained careful to appear genial as he approached, hands in his pockets and concern on his face. "It seems a crime to keep a lady as lovely as you waiting," he offered, his voice smooth and kind, urging her to trust him. "Truly the height of poor manners."

Eva simply wanted to cry. She was cold, her feet hurt and above all she was highly embarrassed at being made to wait. One of her friends had passed and they spoke for a while as she quietly admitted she had most probably been stood up. Her friend pleaded her to leave but Eva reasoned that he deserved a few more minutes. Although her friend wished to wait beside her, Evelina refused and agreed to come meet her once she'd given up.
By the time Amycus arrived she was just about ready to give up altogether. She blushed a little at his words and avoided his eyes as her own were welling slightly with tears. ”Perhaps I just got the time wrong," she reasoned quietly, she was certainly dim enough. But with the date written on parchment she highly doubted it somehow. Maybe it had always been a cruel joke.
But this young man was being very nice to her. Eva didn't recognise him, he looked vaguely familiar but she couldn't place where from. She knew enough to place him as a fellow student. He did look nice enough and she was so vulnerable at the time, she felt she should trust him. Some kindness from a man when stood up can make one more trusting then you ought to be really. When Evelina finally looked up at him she couldn't help a warm smile. “That's kind of you to say, and I'm inclined to agree with you, but what do you suggest I do?”

It was almost too easy. Amycus yearmed for a proper hunt, someone who could match him move for move. But he kept Alecto in mind, and did not abandon his task. Alecto wanted this. She wanted to take the mark more than she wanted to breathe. He would not deny her. It was this thought that sustained him.
Amycus smiled back, ever charming, drawing on years of studying others. He made sure to crinkle his eyes and keep his stance open. He appeared so warm, so understanding, and this was perhaps what made Amycus so dangerous.
"Well," he offered gently, gesturing down the sloping lanes of Hogsmeade, "I suggest you accompany me for a cup of coffee. My treat." And Amycus carefully softened his expression, reaching out to touch her arm. His hand was a warm, solid thing, intended as a source of comfort. He needed to move this along, to pull her out of sight. He wasn't sure how long the others could distract Black. His arrival would make a rather mess of things. And Amycus sincerely doubted an idiot like Black would waste much time hunting for his lost date.

Even as the man stood before her, she still looked around the street hopefully for signs of her missing date. If Sirius were to turn up now, she wasn’t sure she’d be forgiving enough to grant him another chance. All her friends knew of her humiliation - the whole of the school would know soon enough – they loved any such gossip. Despite the friendship groups she chose, the gossiping and giggling was not her thing, the idea of being the subject of that made her cringe. But her new saviour now offered an alternative.
It was a difficult decision for Eva. Part of her felt so utterly humiliated and put out that she had to think sod Black, this gentleman was more than happy to take her for the date she was missing and why not. Half her heart on the other hand still felt she owed Sirius the benefit of the doubt, and following a stranger on her own didn’t seem an entirely sensible. But he seemed so kind, and coffee seemed such a wonderfully warm notion in this dreary weather. She was finding it very difficult to refuse this offer.
As his hand touched her she felt her stomach twist with nerves. The way his touch guided her made it even more difficult to refuse. Her instincts willed her to walk away, from both men, but there was something very persuasive about him and Evelina didn’t really know how to say no at this point, she merely nodded meekly. “That sounds lovely,” she admitted, following his direction. “I didn’t catch your name? I’m Eva.” As they travelled down student packed street, she was granted to several confused looks from students she didn’t even recognise. How gossip spread through the school she did not know, but strangers were clearly aware of her situation from their expressions. She tried her best to ignore this. “So, what brought you to the village this afternoon?”

Amycus guided the pair of them with ease. He was a man used to getting his way. If he thought about it, he couldn't remember the last time someone had openly defied him. This was the natural order of things. Predators deserved to be in charge, to use the weak on whim. Why else would there be such a disparity of strength?
Evelina willingly followed his wordless commands, falling into step with him. He offered his arm in a show of manners, keeping his smile open. He was aware of the little people whispering around them. The weak did so love their gossip.
She introduced herself and Amycus inclined his head respectfully. He, of course, knew her name. He'd learned as much as he could about her in the past day, probing others for information as discreetly as possible. She wasn't well known for intelligence. This would at least make his task much easier.
"Amycus," he offered, pitching his deep voice a halfstep higher. Light and friendly, he reminded himself, eyes crinkling in his smile. She asked him what had brought him to the village and he considered this point. He couldn't very well tell her the truth. "Just a bit of window shopping," he lied easily enough, "I noticed you'd been out in the cold for a spell and, well, here we are." He opened the door for her at Madame Puddifoot's.
If Amycus had believed in Hell, he might have pictured this. The tea shop was entirely too frilly, each surface covered in lace doilies and excessively girly china mounted on the walls. The establishment was packed with couples snogging over tea. The sight repulsed Amycus, but he remained smiling, guiding Evelina towards the most private table available. Some of the less hormonal patrons seemed astonished by their arrival.
Peons.
He had all his best manners on display, withdrawing her chair for her. His mother would be so proud. She'd be even more proud of what he would do to Miss Gamp later this week.
"Two cappucinos, please," he ordered crisply, folding his hands. "So, what foolish boy treated you so poorly? I can't quite understand his rationale."

It was lovely to be treated like this, particularly after her experiences that morning. This, she reasoned, was what she deserved. Who cares that people were staring. At least they were no longer staring at the lonely looking victim of a missing date.
When he told her his name, Eva had to think hard about where she recognised it, and she was not known for her thinking abilities. She was definitely acquainted with it though, that much she knew. He walked her so decisively though that she couldn’t concentrate and eventually gave up on her thought trail. It would come to her, eventually.
Eva realised quickly they were heading to Puddiftoots and she was unable to contain a look of delight. The warm, cosy tea house with pretty little cakes and tea served in sweet little cups and very cute teapots was heaven to Eva. It was a home away from Hogwarts on Hogsmeade weekends, her and her friends would huddle around a dainty table sharing gossip and giggling. Puddifoots was perfect on winter days such as this.
Not only did Amycus select and guide her to their venue but he ordered for her. No boy had done that for her, to be fair most she had dated whilst arrogant in themselves were awfully shy at first in her company and acted their age somewhat. She liked the change, or she thought she did. Something was niggling he at the back of her mind, the way he spoke sometimes, but she ignored these feelings. Amycus was taking her on a date, he was being positively lovely to her, she didn’t want to think anything bad of him and ruin this lovely surprise.
“Thank you,” she said softly as he ordered, her cheeks were flushed pink both with the new warmth and the blushing shyness she felt whenever she met his eyes. “This is very kind of you. And as for the boy, I was waiting on Sirius Black. Do you know of him?” She wondered vaguely if he had ever had any intentions of showing up. Perhaps he just wanted the attention from her friends to stop. They would certainly be giving him evil looks over breakfast from now on, however much they fancied him. “I probably got the time wrong,” Eva reasoned dejectedly, “I have a habit of that. It’s my own fault. Besides, everything worked out in the end.”
